I recently ran into a problem where my DVD bulldoze on Windows was missing from the list of devices in My Computer. It was there before, but just disappeared! After doing some enquiry, I found a couple of solutions that worked.

Unfortunately, the solutions are different depending on which Os you are running: XP, Vista or Windows 7/8/10. I'll try to list out as many fixes for this trouble equally I can and which Os it applies too.

Reinstall Drivers

A lot of times, yous might run into a message like this in Device Manager about your CD/DVD drive:

Windows cannot load the device commuter for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Lawmaking 39)

You can reinstall the drivers for the CD/DVD drive by going to Start, Control Panel, System and Security, System and then clicking on Device Director.

Aggrandize CD/DVD-ROM Drives, then right-click on the device and click Uninstall. Restart the computer and Windows should auto-detect the bulldoze and reinstall the drivers for you.

If your hardware is not even showing up in the Device Managing director, and then y'all may actually take a hardware problem, such as a faulty connection or a dead drive. It's worth checking this option out if the computer is onetime.

Check BIOS Settings

If you recently were in the BIOS, so you should make sure that the bulldoze didn't get disabled past blow. This is normally very rare, merely in that location are occasions when information technology can happen. This is especially true if you lot gave your computer to someone else for a repair or something of that sort.

You lot should make sure that the CD/DVD ROM drive at least shows up as an pick in the Kicking options page.

Upper Filters/Lower Filters Problem

If your Windows XP or Windows Vista calculator is not able to recognize the CD/DVD bulldoze, then you might have a classic trouble that will probably not prove upwards on whatsoever computer that has the most contempo Windows updates applied to it.

Y'all accept to edit two registry entries to fix the problem in Windows XP and Vista. Y'all can either do information technology manually or you can download the set from Microsoft here:

http://back up.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us

If you want to do it manually, go to regedit and navigate to this entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

In the right pane, you should run into Upper Filters and Lower Filters. Delete both of these and then restart the figurer.

Run Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter

If you are having the effect on Windows 7, then yous can endeavor to run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter. This will automatically diagnose and try to remedy the trouble.

Note that this will probably only work if you can encounter the CD/DVD bulldoze in the BIOS and in Device Manager, just just not anywhere else in Windows. If yous don't see information technology in those ii places, you lot got a hardware or connection trouble.

Yous can run the troubleshooter by going to Starting time, Control Panel and and so searching for troubleshooter in the search box. Click on Troubleshooting. Finally, under Hardware and Audio, click Configure a device.

troubleshoot hardware

Click Next and Windows will detect problems and endeavor to fix them automatically.

Registry Edit

If none of that works, you tin try editing a registry key that may have gotten deleted or corrupted. Open an administrator command prompt and copy and paste the following:

reg.exe add "HKLM\Arrangement\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

Restart your reckoner and run into if the drive is now recognized.

Drive Letter

You should also make certain the drive has a drive letter assigned to it and that the letter is not already taken by another device. Read my previous mail service on how to change drive letters in Windows to run into if the bulldoze letter is causing the bulldoze now to evidence upward.

System Restore

If you're still having issues and your drive was showing upwards earlier, simply now it'southward gone, you can attempt to perform a system restore to a time when the drive was working properly.

Sometimes a new piece of software is installed that can corrupt your system so that information technology no longer recognizes your CD/DVD drive.

If that doesn't work, try plugging the bulldoze into another estimator and come across if it shows upward there. You can quickly determine whether it'southward a problem with the hardware or with the Windows operating system. Skilful luck!
